Introducing Terry Fox
Many people think Terry Fox(1) is Canada’s greatest hero. Terry Fox is famous for running The Marathon of Hope(2). Unfortunately, when Terry was 18 years old, he was diagnosed with cancer(3). He had to have his right leg amputated. Terry had an idea. He had a dream. It would take unbelievable determination! He wanted to run across Canada(4) hoping to get donations for cancer research. With great perseverance and willpower, Terry trained for over one year before he started his run.
Hoping to raise one million dollars for cancer research, Terry started his run in St. John’s, Newfoundland(5). Running 26 miles (41.6 km) everyday, Terry tried to run all the way across Canada on his artificial leg. In the beginning of his run, Canadians did not know very(6) much about The Marathon of Hope. Nonetheless after many(7) days of running, Terry became a symbol of hope for Canadians. Unfortunately, after 143 days and 5373 km, Terry had to stop his run on September 1, 1980(8). Terry was very disappointed. He had to return to his home in Port Coquitlam, B.C. Sadly, he died at age 22 in June(9) in 1981. Today, the Terry Fox Run continues in Canada and internationally in hope of raising money for cancer research(10). As of February 2018, over 700 million dollars has been raised in Terry’s name. With perseverance, determination and willpower, Terry’s dream of hope did come true.
Expression: With perseverance, determination and willpower!
